Starter Ryan Vogelsong didn't make it through the third inning and things were looking dark for the Giants, trailing in the series 2-1 and in the game 4-1. Then, their bats came to life, led by a suddenly hot Hunter Pence, who is batting .467 in the World Series. Pablo Sandoval also had a big game, coming up with a clutch two run single to break the game open.
One of the un-sung heroes is Giant reliever Petit throwing 3 scoreless innings to allow the comeback. Without those innings, the Royals may have increased the lead to the point of no return. With the series tied 2-2, it's truly a World Series up for grabs. Who can take 2 of 3 and win it all? We shall soon see. Someone get Peyton a snickers bar - he gets angry when he's hungry. Here he is mad at the scoreboard operator. Yup, and at the crowd. The Giants send veteran right hander, Jake Peavy against the Royals in Game 2. The Royals will be desperate for a win, looking to avoid falling into an 0-2 hole in the series before it shifts to San Francisco. Can Peavy provide a big-game tonight or will the youth and speed of the Royals overcome?
Hunter Pence hit a crushing 2-run homer in the first inning and it's all the runs Madison Bumgarner needed. He threw 7 innings for the fifth time in five starts this post-season, completely dominating the Royals, who looked a bit over their heads in this first game of the World Series. The kids of Kansas City have had a great run, but their magic was nowhere to be found on this night.
The only threat came with men on 2nd and 3rd and no out - but Bumgarner struck out two batters and throttled them out of the threat. The only blemish on Bumgarner's night was a solo home-run hit in the 7th inning when the game was already decided. The Giants got hitting from several spots in the order and look poised in this series, taking game one by a 7-1 count and send Jake Peavy to the mound in Game 2. It's pitching vs a hot team of destiny. Can the pitching of the San Francisco Giants cool off the red-hot Royals? We will see a lot tonight in Game 1 as the best pitcher so far in this post-season - Madison Bumgarner takes on Shields for the Royals.
