#Patriots Overcome Early Struggles and Fluke Pick-6 from #Brady to Defeat #Colts 34-27 #NEvsIND10/18/2015 The New England Patriots overcame early defensive struggles and a fluke drop by Edelman turned pick-6 that led to the Patriots trailing the Colts 21-20 at halftime. After the half, the D made adjustments and managed to get a pass rush on Andrew Luck, holding the Colts to one late score.
Brady overcame the fluke interception and dominated the Colts D - throwing for 312 Yards and 3 TDs. L. Blount ran for 93 Yards with one rushing TD and also a receiving TD. He's been a nightmare for the Colts the last two seasons. However, the play of the game wasn't made by the Patriots. It was an insane call by the Colts - deep in their end - to go for a trick play on 4th Down. It was 4th and 3 and instead of a standard punt, the Colts lined up in a weird formation with only one lineman and a player under center and all other players set out wide on the field. The Patriots lined five players over the ball, but for some crazy reason Indy snapped it anyway and the Patriots made a rather simple tackle (outnumbering the Colt players on that spot on the field 5-2). It was a crazy play and I can't wait to hear the explanation from Colt coaches on that meltdown. The Patriots improve their record to 5-0 and face the New York Jets (4-1) in an important division match-up next week. The Patriots were coming off an early season bye week - something most players agree is not optimal as teams have yet to find enough rhythm to take a week off and still maintain chemistry. And on cue - the Patriots looked out of sync and sloppy early in the first half.
The Dallas D registered 5 first half sacks of Brady and harassed him for most of the first three quarters. However, as the game wore on - the offensive line for the Patriots finally found a groove and started blocking for Brady. Tom responded by shredding the Cowboy D in the second half - completing 20 of 27 passes for 275 Yards and 2 TDs with zero interceptions. The Patriots D had it's moments against a Cowboys team playing without its two best players - Tony Romo and Dez Bryant. The Patriots got pressure on Weeden and stopped the rushing attack - holding the Cowboys without a touchdown in the 30 - 6 defeat at Cowboy Stadium. The Patriots will have a lot to look at on film and a lot to improve if they want to make a deep run in the playoffs - as there appeared to be some weaknesses on the offensive line, which was an issue at times last year. As always, the Patriots will go as far as health dictates - paramount to their success will be the continued health of Rob Gronkowski (4 Catches for 67 Yards) and J. Edelman (4 Catches for 120 Yards and one TD.) It goes without saying the Patriots need Tom Brady to remain healthy. The Patriots need to regain their pre-bye week chemistry on the offensive line. Look for Belichick to use this game film for motivation going into the game with the Colts next week. |
