BERNADETTE CYNTHIA HEALY
EPISODE 25
I push in my chair in and leave the conference room. At the door I turn to speak to Keith, 'Please escort Mr Hayworth to the door Keith, and then would you mind calling Summerbee's Solicitors and making an appointment with Mr Nelson for this afternoon?' He nods, and I swear I catch a glimmer of a smirk as the gobsmacked intruder sits in silence.
I sit in Keith's office and watch as the two men walk towards the exit. I lay my documents on the desk in front of me and replay the last half an hour in my head. Keith was always a fast learner, but that play in the conference room was inspired. It's always heart-warming to realise your employees are even better than you expect them to be. It doesn't occur to me to think about what he said, I only sit and gloat about Mr Hayworth's take down. It reminds me of watching Jonathon in court.
Keith walks in and where I expect to see a smile, creases adorn his forehead and he looks worried.
'That's not the face I was expecting to see?' I query.
'You need to tell me everything Augusta. I need to know how to fight this because we just made quite the enemy.' He moves behind the desk and sits at his place, opposite me.
'Something has happened in the last two minutes since you walked out of the office, hasn't it?'
'Astute.'
'Rude.'
Keith sighs and while I wait for an answer I take out my glasses and rub them clean before placing them on my nose. Nearly a minute passes before either of us say anything.
'I was right. My jest in the conference room was right. There is someone contesting her Will. But I don't know who. Apparently it isn't her long lost brother though, but I'm not sure what to believe. Summerbee's tactics are definitely a little archaic. They may dot every 'i' and cross every 't' but they are not afraid to a few underhand dealings. That's one of the reasons why we don't deal with them.'
I say nothing.
'From what I could glean from the drippy-nosed whipper snapper, the £6.3million, is under threat from their own solicitors, they are trying to work out who would benefit from the Will if you were not going to go looking for the long-lost brother. Honestly August, how does this happen to you? It's like you go looking for the most convoluted cases.'
I raise my arms in defense, 'I'll have you know that this fell into my lap and was not asked for! I'd give anything not to have to deal with these kinds of memories all over again.'
'That's what I was afraid of,' Keith is blushing and I can only imagine the question that is on the tip of his tongue.
'Its fine Keith, you can ask. It's part of your job and we need to be thorough.'
'Can't you just tell me?'
I look down at the desk and see the words I'd typed that evening swim before my eyes. 'Can't you just ask?'
'I can see it's going to cause you great pain, if it isn't already. But I do need to know everything. What was the relationship between you and... Bernadette Cynthia Healy,' he reads the unfamiliar name slowly as he becomes accustomed to it.
