Harnessing the Power of the Web to Create New Art Forms - @Uebyn #MondayBlogs

A bit more than a month ago, I had a conversation with an author about the state of art and the role of emerging technologies and social media in creating new art forms or at least enhancing the established forms. It's taken me quite some time to ponder a response - mostly due to needing to research the subject enough to even explain what I'm attempting on my blog.

You can read his article about web art here.

What exactly is this 'Web-Art'?

It's using the possibilities of emerging technology to enhance art and to possibly create entirely new art forms.

For me - As an artist, I don't want to lock myself into narrow boxes and fail to see the possibilities of the new media that extend beyond mere text based story.

Some of the new elements include -

Embedding relevant musical selections into a story.
Embedding visual elements including pictures and video.
Using social media to give the story a 'live performance' aspect that moves beyond traditional storytelling.

It is more than merely combining existing arts, it is finding ways to use the emerging technologies to help convey the story in a way that wasn't possible before now.

When I encounter art online, the availability of contact with the artist and the fans serves to enhance my enjoyment of the source material. Seeing the enormous amounts of fan art created for Game of thrones, for example, inspires me to keep creating my own art. Don't think or worry about anything - just create and let what will be...be.

I've experimented on my blog with the beginnings of this emerging 'web art'. There have been short stories with music and a few with pictures. Also, I post my narrators' diary updates in real time on social media. I'm trying to create an enhanced experience that offers more to my readers than simple text based story.

What do think of this new 'web art'? Do you enjoy stories that combine media? Would you like to see more content with multiple 'arts' contained in one?

Tell me your thoughts in the comments.

Enjoy your Monday.

From Vegas,
