The Lists-

They taught a list in school, but this is my version, shaped by how each work influenced me as a writer.

The Top Ten pieces of Literature according to me:

1 - The Brothers Karamazov --- Fyoder Dostoevsky - no book had a greater impact on me.
2 - Hamlet --- William Shakespeare
3 - War and Peace --- Leo Tolstoy
4 -  Lolita --- Vladimir Nabakov
5 - The Great Gatsby --- F. Scott Fitzgerald
6 - As I Lay Dying --- William Faulkner
7 - The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn --- Mark Twain
8 - Crime and Punishment - Fyoder Dostoevksy
9- The Stories of Anton Chekov - Anton Chekov
10 - The Metamorphisis - Franz Kafka

What do you say? What are your favorite works of literature?

Ivo Andric - A bridge on Drina, and in the same context I would suggest the movie "Konjanik" by Branko Ivanda. Pushkin or Sergei Yesenin, Bugakhovs "The master and Margarita", "The unbearable lightness of being" Svetislav Kundera, "Doing Psychoanalysis in Tehran" by Gohar Homayounpour...

A few of those are in the next grouping. Very nice titles in there.

Fantastic list. I might find room for something a little more modern. Perhaps Catch 22 or the Rabbit books of John Updike. If something needed to go to make room it would probably be dear old Gatsby, fond of it though I am.

Thanks for visiting. As far as 'needing' something modern, I certainly have a list including more modern works, including Steppenwolf by Hesse, Call it Sleep Roth, The Clown Boll among others.

I might ask why there are no female authors on the list

Thanks for coming by and commenting. There are several works by women just outside the top ten of my rankings. I shall post the rest of my top 50 in a few days. Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Plath's The Bell Jar, Gilman's Herland, and many others make that next list.

Would replace Lolita with Pale Fire.

I might actually prefer Ada best of his works, but it is Lolita that made such a dramatic impact on my writing career. That's how this list is 'filtered' for me.
